The Ministry of Communications and Technology has convened a landmark national summit focused on digital integration, marking the first time government agencies, private sector representatives, academic institutions, and youth innovators have gathered to unify Somalia's digital transformation efforts.
The two-day conference, held under the theme of digital unification, brings together key stakeholders including the Central Bank of Somalia, the National Identification and Registration Authority, and various private sector entities. In his opening remarks, the Director General of the Ministry emphasized that this represents a historic first step toward creating a cohesive digital ecosystem.
"This is truly the first meeting of its kind where we are consulting on how to unify efforts regarding digitalization," the Director General stated. "We are taking stock of the technology that government agencies and private sector entities are working with, so that these efforts can be unified."
The summit highlights the growing recognition that digital infrastructure is as critical as physical infrastructure such as roads, airports, and seaports. The Director General drew parallels between traditional infrastructure projects and the need for high-speed internet connectivity, noting that reliable digital highways are essential for modern commerce and governance.

A central objective of the conference is to establish a unified government system where citizens can access all public services through a single digital portal. The Director General illustrated this vision using the example of "Yusuf," a hypothetical citizen who could enter one digital gateway to access tax services, passport applications, business registrations, and other government functions without visiting multiple offices.
"Whether someone is paying taxes, managing their business, needs a passport, or requires any government service, all these services should be accessible through one unified system where they can pay fees and complete transactions seamlessly," he explained.
The summit also addresses critical infrastructure gaps, with discussions on expanding high-speed internet to regions currently lacking connectivity. Cybersecurity and data protection feature prominently on the agenda, with plans to establish national data centers and implement robust security frameworks to protect citizen information.
The Director General noted that extensive preparatory work has been completed, including the development of policies, strategies, and legal frameworks to support digital transformation. These foundational efforts are expected to serve as the backbone for Somalia's integrated digital future.
As the conference continues for its second day, participants are expected to develop concrete action plans for implementing unified digital services, establishing public-private partnerships, and creating the regulatory environment necessary for Somalia's digital economy to thrive.
